[attr="class","temptext"]Years ago, a scientist named Austin Vanguard was working on an experiment, one he said would change the world. He was working on creating the ultimate military weapon. Something that soldiers wouldn't have to carry on them, because it would be in them, inside their DNA. A serum that, once consumed, would give the consumer some kind of supernatural ability. But time after time, test after test, his experiment failed. He never got the result he was looking for. Until he did.[break][break]

It was an accident, really. He was working in his lab when one of his technicians surprised him, causing him to spill the newest batch of test serum onto his skin. He was rushing to the sink when he realized that his skin was no longer wet, though there wasn't any liquid on the floor. His skin had absorbed the serum.[break][break]

Quarantined, as he wasn't sure if it was contagious or deadly, Austin couldn't help but think about his family. He closed his eyes, picturing them in his mind, wishing he could be with them. He heard a whooshing sound, then a gasp, and opened his eyes to find that he had teleported himself home.[break][break]

Two weeks after his discovery, he presented his creation to the government, calling it AV389. AV for his name, and 389, as it was the 389th attempt at the serum. That night, his lab, along with all his findings was blown to pieces, and Austin and his family were never seen again.[break][break]

Unfortunately, what the bomber of the lab didn't think about, was that blowing up a building would cause debris and remnants of AV389 to fly everywhere, including into a nearby river. The AV389 contaminated the river, and leaked into quite a few water sources, and pretty soon, people were popping up all over the world with abilities only read about in story books or seen on TV. [break][break]

As more and more people consumed the serum, world leaders decided to take action. Gathering together the more powerful of those with control over the earth and water elements, they helped to create Vanguard Isle, an island for those that had powers. Over time, Vanguard Isle has become more than a safe haven for those with gifts; it's become their home. That's not to say that some Normals don't live on the island, but the vast majority of the population are those with abilities.[break][break]
